Instructions for Preparation and Shipping of and Cavitational Biopsy Materials

Procedure

  1. Immediately after tooth extraction, blot the tooth dry with a piece of sterile gauze to remove any excess blood contamination. DO NOT WASH THE TOOTH with any water or liquid of any kind. It is important that all teeth be treated exactly the same way in order to alleviate any differences from sample to sample which might otherwise be introduced by various procedures used to wash the teeth. All washes of teeth will be performed by the company in our laboratory using the same highly purified, deionized and distilled water. This will ensure that all teeth have been treated in the same manner after extraction and will therefore allow ALT, Inc. to compare results from teeth obtained from many different sources. Place the specimen in a zip lock bag and seal and freeze until time of shipment.

  2. If the tooth breaks and/or you are also sending the tooth the pathological evaluation, you may send just a portion or the root. Make sure the specimen contains dentinal material. ALT, Inc. will be happy to send any samples along to another laboratory for pathological evaluation free of charge. Since all we do is soak the specimen in water for a brief time and then analyze the extract, our analysis will usually not interfere with subsequent pathological examination.

  3. If you wish to test biopsy material from osteonecrotic/osteomyelitic (cavitational) lesions, remove an intracavitational (intrabony) specimen approximately the size of a grain of wheat or larger and place it in the screw cap, plastic specimen vial (not bag). Close the lid tightly and freeze until shipment. Do NOT add water or any liquid.

  4. Neatly print the Patients Name, Doctors/Dentist Name, Sample Type, Tooth Number or Area of the site on the sample label provide by ALT, Inc. and attach label to the outside of the sample bag or vial.

  5. Place all small specimen bags and/or vials you are sending at one time in a larger sealed plastic bag. Zip lock sandwich bags are fine. Place the larger sealed bag in a padded envelop or wrap it with protective material and place in a box.

  6. Complete the Sample Requisition Form for each and every specimen and place it in the envelope or box. Feel free to photocopy the Sample Requisition Form if you need more.
  7. Send specimens to ALT Inc. using  Federal Express  "Diagnostic Packs" provided upon request.  All FedEx shipping charges are paid by ALT.

  8. All specimens must be sent OVERNIGHT Monday through Thursday.

  9. If it is not possible to send a specimen the day of the procedure, the specimen may be frozen in the specimen container and sent at a later date. We have observed that teeth and cavitational material stored frozen still retain their toxicity for many months. Frozen specimens must be sent overnight the day they are removed from the freezer, but a cold or ice pack is not needed.

  10. ALT accepts VISA, Mastercard and American Express.  May all checks payable to Affinity Labeling Technologies, Inc.

  11. .Mail specimens to ALT, Inc.  at the following address:
